In work loop studies in vitro the mean power output during contractions replicating the natural cycle was 342 W kg. The power output was higher than during simple sawtooth cycles. Apparently, in addition to exploiting the advantages of an asymmetrical cycle, the pectoralis of quail during flight benefits from velocity dependent deactivation at the end of the downstroke.
